From Research to Cultural Discoveries: A PhD Student's Journey in Gothenburg
In February, our PhD student, Leon Kutoš, completed an extended research visit at the Chalmers University of Technology, which began in January. We took the opportunity to sit down with him and explore the highlights and insights of his enriching experience during this academic endeavor.
How long was your stay in Gothenburg?
My stay in Gothenburg lasted from January 12th to February 8th.
What were the primary activities and goals of your stay in Gothenburg?
The primary goal of my stay in Gothenburg was to deepen my understanding of intramuscular EMG signal processing and analysis. My activities included learning about the simulation and acquisition of intramuscular EMG signals, as well as practicing their analysis, particularly template-matching results. Beyond these technical aspects, my stay provided a valuable opportunity to collaborate with colleagues, exchange ideas, and gain insights into different research methodologies.
What did a typical day in Gothenburg look like for you?
A typical day in Gothenburg began with me leaving for work
around 8:30 AM, allowing for a 30-minute walk to the
university. This walk was a great way to start the day, giving
me time to mentally prepare and organize my tasks. I would
begin work around 9 AM, focusing on intramuscular EMG analysis
and collaborating with colleagues.
Around noon, I bought my lunch at the university canteen but
ate in the lab's kitchen area, where we would gather to eat
and talk. This created a friendly and relaxed atmosphere,
making it easy to connect with colleagues outside of work
discussions. After lunch, I continued with my tasks, whether
it was writing, reviewing materials, or engaging in further
discussions. In the evenings, I sometimes explored the city,
visited museums, or simply relaxed and reflected on the day's
progress.
What were your initial impressions of your colleagues' laboratories and facilities in Gothenburg?
My initial impressions of my colleagues' laboratories and facilities in Gothenburg were very positive. The labs are well-equipped with modern technology, creating a great environment for research and collaboration. Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making it easy to integrate and feel comfortable. It was clear that there is a strong emphasis on both innovation and teamwork, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
In what ways did the work experience in Gothenburg differ from that in Maribor, particularly in terms of working hours, the balance between theoretical and practical work, and communication with colleagues?
The work experience in Gothenburg differed from that in Maribor in several ways. One of the main differences was the start of the workday—while we usually begin around 7:00 or 8:00, they start later, around 9:00 or 9:30. Another noticeable difference was the lunch routine. In Gothenburg, colleagues typically have lunch together around 12:00, and most bring prepared meals, whereas in Maribor, we often go to the canteen. In terms of work balance, both places have a mix of theoretical and practical work, but the structured lunch breaks and later start times in Gothenburg created a slightly more relaxed daily rhythm. Communication with colleagues was very open and friendly, making collaboration easy and enjoyable.
How did you spend your leisure time in Gothenburg, and are there any specific Gothenburg experiences you would recommend?
During my time in Gothenburg, I spent my leisure time exploring the city's rich culture and food scene. I visited several museums, which offered fascinating insights into history, art, and science—definitely a must for anyone interested in culture. I also took the opportunity to try different foods, experiencing both local Swedish cuisine and the international flavors that the city has to offer. Beyond that, I loved wandering through the city, discovering its unique atmosphere, from the charming streets of Haga to the scenic waterfront. One of my favorite activities was collecting vinyl records—Gothenburg has some great record stores with a fantastic selection, making it a perfect place for music lovers. If I had to recommend specific experiences, I'd suggest visiting Universeum, the Gothenburg Museum of Art, and taking a stroll through the Slottsskogen park.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I am deeply grateful to the HybridNeuro project and the European Commission for enabling my rewarding visit to Gothenburg. This opportunity has been pivotal in expanding my knowledge and refining my expertise in the field. Beyond the academic growth, my time in Gothenburg has been a profoundly enriching experience, offering cultural immersion and personal development. I sincerely appreciate the support that has significantly contributed to my professional journey and personal growth.
